Bulli & Changshu Teams Unite to Restore Legacy Blast Furnace Winch Drum Assemblies

25.02.2026

In May 2025, one of our valued customer’s in the steel industry entrusted our team with the refurbishment of two legacy Blast Furnace winch drum assemblies. The units, along with all associated components, arrived in severely rusted and deteriorated condition after years of outdoor storage.

With these assemblies scheduled for installation during the customer’s planned Blast Furnace Upgrade Project in the February 2026 shutdown window, our Bulli team quickly responded to determine the most effective and efficient approach to restore and return the equipment to full working order.

Over the following eight months, teams across our global business collaborated closely to bring the project to completion. The refurbishment included the manufacture of new gearing from our DBS China manufacturing facility in Changshu for the two smaller gearboxes. In parallel with these parts being manufactured, the Australian team in Bulli completed the installation of new ropes and chains and carried out in‑house modifications to the rope drums. The drive modules were also fully assembled, including laser alignment of the motors to the gearboxes to ensure optimal performance.

Customer‑supplied components were incorporated, and each assembly underwent thorough testing and quality checks to verify compliance with operational requirements. Both fully refurbished assemblies were dispatched on schedule at the end of January, meeting the customer’s project timeline as required.

“It was a great team effort from all departments; the Shop Floor Team, Supply Chain, Engineering, Proposals, and the Joint Account Managers, to get these units to where we are today. Working in close collaboration with our customer ensured we met their needs at every steps of the journey.”
