From Retired to Rebuilt: DBS Canada Keeps Cement Plant Running!
DBS Canada recently supported a valued customer operating a cement plant with a critical girth gear challenge. The plant’s kiln, which has been modified multiple times over the last few years, is driven by a large girth gear currently showing clear signs of fatigue, posing a risk to continued production.
While a new girth gear is being ordered, the customer required a reliable interim solution to safeguard operations. An old, worn girth gear that had been removed from service many years ago was identified as a potential candidate for reuse, provided it could be safely assessed, refurbished, and adapted to the modified equipment.
DBS Canada’s scope was to reassemble and carry out a comprehensive inspection of the gear, including verification of split face gap, runout, and tooth spacing, to determine whether it could be re‑cut, machined, and modified to fit the current application.
Following our inspection, the gear was confirmed to be suitable for refurbishment. Machining is now underway, and the refurbished girth gear will be delivered in time for the customer’s scheduled shutdown, providing a dependable short‑term solution and greatly reducing production risk.
By applying our engineering expertise and proven refurbishment capabilities, we help our customers maintain production, optimise asset value, and avoid costly disruptions when it matters most.
