An interview with… Georgina Serey, Head of Safety, Environment and Integrated Management Systems at DBS Chile.

We recently caught up with Georgina Serey, Head of Safety, Environment and Integrated Management Systems for David Brown Santasalo Chile, to find out more about her and her role at David Brown Santasalo. Georgina is based at our Antofagasta workshop and has worked with us for almost 10 years, she leads the design, development and implementation of DBS Chile’s safety, environment and management system standards.

Q: How long have you worked at DBS?

Georgina: I have been at DBS since December 2015

Q: Which DBS site are you based at?

Georgina: My base site is the Antofagasta service centre in Chile.

Q: Do you look after all the sites in Chile?

Georgina: Yes, with my excellent team of safety, environmental and management system specialists.

Q: What is your role?

Georgina: I am the Head of Safety, Environment and Integrated Management Systems for the company in Chile.

Q: What does your job role involve?

Georgina: With my team, I am responsible for leading the company's safety, environment and integrated management system, managing the design, development and implementation of the company's safety, environment and management system standards.

Q: What do you love about your job?

Georgina: Being able to interact closely with the entire team that integrates our service centres in Chile, Antofagasta and Santiago, to be able to observe the behaviour and cultural change that can be achieved in a multidisciplinary team of professionals and to meet great goals. Being able to lead a team that respects and supports me in each of my professional challenges. And finally, to have good mentors who have accompanied me along the way.

Q: What do you find challenging about your job?

Georgina: Human behavior, cultural and organizational changes in the company have always been a welcome challenge for me. Working with my team to design and implement high standards of quality, safety and respect for the environment. Each person within our company, when hired, brings with them a history, a way of working and a way of making decisions. The challenge for me is to make the best of that prior learning and add it to our knowledge, as well as helping them to understand the high standards we were towards here at DBS. It's like learning a new language for people and speaking it with their teammates! This challenge of training, behavioral control, and daily decision making is what has allowed us to lower the accident rate to zero for over 5 years. We are very proud of what we have achieved.

Q: Can you tell us about the training videos you created?

Georgina: Since the year 2021, the safety department has implemented a special training methodology using artificial intelligence, this allows explanatory videos to train new staff, plant staff, visitors and clients, and this enables us to standardise and improve the training of our employees.

Q: You also did a site safety campaign with children's drawings. Can you tell us about that?

Georgina: Here at DBS Chile we have had a special committee made up of colleagues who are dedicated to addressing issues of safety and health at work, and they work together with my safety department. Within this committee there are ‘working committees’ that design and implement safety programs with our employees and their families. One of these programs is called PAINT ME SAFE, a contest where the children of workers, mechanical specialists, are drawn and painted by their children with a safety theme and then there is an award for the best drawing,

Q: Something fun to end our interview on, what do you like to do in your spare time?

Georgina: I live in a coastal city and I love to watch the sunsets and walk by the sea and see the marine fauna and birds. I also love to travel and get to know both my country and other countries that connect me with nature.

Thank you for your time, Georgina.
